Golfers and Famous Events

Like with every sport, there are very important players and events involved in the game. Golf is no different to any other sport. There are golfers that make millions year in, year out and this is because of their success. Take Tiger Woods as an example. Tiger has been playing golf from a very young age, in fact from the age of two years old. He kept on working hard at his golfing game from the start and he was just a natural golfer. This is a major part of his career which has led him to much success in the game of golf. He has won 14 major events (The Master, USPGA, The US Open and the British Open) and is worth over $600 million! Even though he was worth that amount of money and the amount of major tournaments he has won, he is still not the most successful golfer of all time. That honour goes to Jack Nicklaus.

There are many famous events in golf, mainly because of the iconic winners of that tournament, the amount of money involved if you win and also what golf course it is played on. There are four 'majors' in golf. These majors are The Masters, The U.S Open, The U.S.P.G.A and The British Open. All of these events are the four of the most important in the golfing, the most important is The Ryder Cup, the match between the United States and Europe. This event is played every two years, and alternates between courses in the US and Europe. The last Ryder Cup was played in 2014 in Gleneagles Golf Club in Wales, where Europe beat the US by quite a large margin. This is why I love watching golf because of the excitement involved in the sport. It is very easy to get attracted to.

Golf

The Rules and Clubs.
Like with nearly all games of sport, there are rule in golf as well. Some rules in golf and can be quite strict and some can be quite lenient. When a golfer disregards a rule of golf, a 'penalty' is given to the player, depending on how severely they have broken a rule. Inside the main rule book published by the R&A (Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews) it reads "Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair. But to do what is fair, you need to know the Rules of Golf." There is twenty eight different rules with lots of sub sections in these rules. (e.g. Rule 15 - Substituted or wrong ball: A player must complete the hole with the same ball that was teed off with, unless that ball has been lost or broken.)

A golf bag consists of 14 or less clubs, if you surpass the limit, you will have to remove one club of your choice from your bag and also receive a penalty. A golfer may bring any amount of balls or golf tees onto the golf course. You would carry these items in your golf bag. Golfers have to make a very challenging decision on what clubs to bring with them onto the golf course. Nearly all golfers bring a
driver, irons, a wedge and a putter, but lots of golfers like to bring specific clubs, such as a 10.5 degree driver or 4 iron instead of a 3 iron. It tends to depend on the golfers personal preference.

Golf

Hi, my name is Zach. Today I am going to talk to you about the sport that I have been playing golf competitively since the age of 9 (I am currently 16), and that sport is golf. I will tell you all you need to know about golf!

What is golf?
Golf is a non-contact sport which is played on a golf course. People that play golf (golfers) use a variety of different clubs in an attempt to hit the golf ball into the hole. The goal of golf is to get the golf ball into the hole in the fewest strokes (shots) you can. It could take you one stroke or even twenty, it really depends on how you play the hole. Each golf course consists of the tee boxes at the start and the holes at the end. The tee box is usually marked to show the golfer where they are meant to take their first shot from. In between the tee box and the hole, there is a area of short grass called the fairway. Either side of the fairway is long areas of grass called the rough. Water can be added to the course as well as bunkers, which are sand-based areas placed around the course. These are used to try and make the golf course trickier for the competitors. The area surrounded by the hole is called the green. This part is very short grass which is used to try and putt the ball into the hole using a putter, which is a type of golf club. I will be talking about the different clubs in a different blog post. There is different names for different amounts such as strokes, depending on the 'par' of the hole. There is three types of pars, Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5. A par 3 is the shortest type of hole, the strokes are different for each type of par. On a par 3 hole, a 'hole in one' is one stroke, a 'birdie' is two strokes, a 'par' is three strokes, a 'bogey' is four strokes, a 'double bogey' is five strokes and a 'triple bogey' is six. The names of strokes end after 6 or 7 strokes, triple bogey is where the names end, after that they only say the amount of strokes it took them to complete the hole. For par 4s, it changes slightly from the way the par 3 scores work. Instead, you add one to every stroke (e.g A birdie, two strokes on a par 3, is 3 strokes on a par 4. A par, three strokes on a par 3, is four strokes on a par 4 and so on.)
